Probe Thermometer -50+300 deg. C
We supply a number of different thermometers that would fall under the heading of probe thermometers. However lets take a look at a specific type of probe thermometer, which is a one piece wide range thermometer, ideally suited for use in the food industry.
Essentially these thermometers consist of a bead thermistor inside a stainless steel probe. The measuring range is very wide, which means absolute accuracy across the whole range may suffer. For most users this will not matter at all. Most food uses fall within the range of +50 deg. C to about a top end of 200 deg.C. As this is the middle of the range it will be the greatest accuracy.
The uses we have heard about from our customers cover an astonishing range of applications, even within the food industry. Everything from candy making to scalding pigs. From checking dishwashers to making home brew, these low cost thermometers do an astonishing range of jobs.
These thermometers are available in two lengths from our website at MoreStuff.biz

Hackability: Of course More Stuff is all about making simple stuff do things it was never designed for. It is very easy to expose the bead thermister. Just unscrew the stainless steel probe at the bottom red ring and you will have direct access to the thermister on about 100mm of leads. Of course the tehrmal response will now be quite fast due to the reduced thermal mass. Keep in mind the thermister is quite delicate without the protection of the probe. Sorry to say the electronics are not exactly hacker friendly. Very tiny, custom microprocessor and no clues as to what anything does.
The good news is, we do sell some very hackable temperature probes, which are microprocessor compatible. See the Dallas 18B20 or 18S20 or for a more ready to go solution see our temperature and humidity module
